Mammoths at the Gates

Mammoths at the Gates, Nghi Vo, 2023 novella. The fourth of the Singing Hills series (number three here and you can go back from there). Much less "fun" than number three - this is a sadder and quieter book - but everything in this series has been good. (And it's not *no* fun, I mean, there are mammoths! And Nghi Vo puts a lot of good little moments into everything!) I thought I knew what kind of story it was telling and then it took a turn, and damn. I love a story that can surprise me and I love a story with some weight and power. Do we have enough words of these to nominate them for Best Series yet? I guess not, if they're all under 40K and there's four of them and they'd have to hit 240K? (And if she's planning to end at five, they still won't make it. Maybe she'll do a novel, like Wells eventually did with Murderbot?)
