I'm curious whether anyone has an informed opinion - or heck, just an opinion - on the edible lifetimes of:
a jar of salsa
half an avocado (in plastic bag)
half a can of tiny shrimp (in plastic bag)
a jar of pickles
a bottle of V8
an older bottle of V8

Certain items are definitely headed for disposal, such as the egg. Ahem. Let us never mention that again.

In other news, I'm still alive, although struggling with a lot of stress over my return to school.

a jar of salsa

It depends how hot it is. Hot salsa is pretty hard to grow mold on. Mold likes a somewhat less acidic environment. Like mild salsa.

half an avocado (in plastic bag)

Two hours? Seriously. You can't save avacado unless it's factory vacuum sealed.

half a can of tiny shrimp (in plastic bag)

Crustaceans don't have a noticeable shelf life either. And they're notorious for making you sick when you eat them too late. Toss.

a jar of pickles

Six billion years. It's the brine.

a bottle of V8

Opened or unopened? Unopened V8 is probably fine. It won't taste its freshest if it's been more than a couple of months, but it won't have grown anything either.

Hm. I'd say the order those items would go bad in, from soonest to latest would be: avacado, shrimp, old bottle of V8, salsa, new v8, pickles. That might be too relative to be helpful though. Also, I didn't know they sold tiny shrimp in cans. That sounds kind of cute. Is it a tiny can?

If you want to talk about school stress sometime, I'm here. Feeling a little unstressed, due to only taking 2.5 credits, but at the same time, understanding exactly how you feel from last semester, and. yes.

yes.

We (meaning Ami) discovered that opened V8 can go bad in the fridge. (I'm not sure how long it has been there, but definitely under a month.) On the other hand, I keep unopened V8 indefinitely in the cabinet.

This is a great time to start a compost pile.

The V8, alas, did turn out to have something growing in it. But you were totally right about the avocado, alas.

It's like a tuna can. They may be "cocktail shrimp" or something?? They're good with avocados...

We should totally talk about school stress sometime. Also we should, like, talk sometime, it having been eight million years. Maybe, like, on sccs sometime?

When I think "compost pile", I think "owns a backyard"... not only do I not have anywhere to put it, what would I use the compost for? But not a bad idea in principle.

Eeeee. I'm very sorry.

I think that one could compost indoors if you had a way to keep the smell in. I think I have seen indoor composting things sold in catalogs, but this doesn't seem worth it.

Unless, of course, you really love your houseplants and want to feed them food from your refrigerator.

That would be fabulous. I'm around on sccs a lot.
