What Stalks the Deep, T. Kingfisher, 2025 novella. Damn this one was good; I did not intend to finish it last night but I couldn't put it down. I had some mixed feelings about the second one and I liked this one better as a sequel to the first one, so, I would not abandon the series at two, is my recommendation! Spoilers: some very effective claustrophobia - I don't think of myself as particularly claustrophobic but sometimes I get gently freaked out when I think back to being in the spiral staircase at Sacre-Coeur (where you are spiralling around for many floors in this effectively solid cylinder of stone, which at the time I was mostly focused on physically managing knees-wise, but in retrospect my brain would like to alert me to some concerns) and the spiral tunnel part of the novella really called that back (except obviously way worse because tight crawling). Which wasn't a *problem* - I was reading this book expecting it to have scary parts - but was pretty intense. Also it made me so happy that they got to meet an alien group mind thing and *not* kill it, yay.
