Illuminations, T Kingfisher, 2022 middlegrade novel. This was cute and clever and fun. Definitely younger than some of her stuff where she was like "this is middlegrade, right?". Spoiler: I was disturbed by the ending, where they had basically concluded that trapping the Scarling in the box was torture for it - I was hoping they would find a way to illuminate it to sleep, or something, so that it wouldn't suffer. Like yes it was trying to kill them but a thousand years of confinement and sensory deprivation also sucks.
