Masters of the Universe, 2026 film. It's taken me awhile to write this up (I saw it a month ago) because I wanted to try to actually say things (it's a bad movie but a rich text) and coherency can be hard these days.

I mostly dislike and won't watch the genre of live action/realistic-CGI remakes but I thought He-Man was the perfect use case for them in that unlike a Disney or Dreamworks movie the Filmation animation was mostly optimized for budget rather than for artistry and is not (IMO) the sort of fully-realized creative vision that something like Moana or Lion King or HTTYD is. My love of He-Man was already about nostalgia and imagination and not the actual cartoon footage, and so seeing Beast Man etc brought to CGI life was fun, whee! (Sadly didn't love the Sorceress costume/design though.)

All Hail Chaos, Sarah Rees Brennan, 2026 novel, middle of a trilogy that started with Long Live Evil. Brennan has a lot of pieces moving on the chessboard but she keeps all the plates spinning, to mix a metaphor; she's funny and interesting and good at making me care about her characters. If you liked the first one you've presumably been eagerly awaiting this one and if you didn't like the first one are you even still reading this paragraph. (But she's doing some really interesting stuff about Story and about The Remix in particular, like, the elements and moments that become core to a story and how they can get shuffled or slanted but are still what makes that story that story. Like the book is also full of memes and jokes and cross-examination of romantasy but I think we're building up to some really interesting stuff in the last book about how much a story can change and still be itself, which is something I find very interesting as a person who thinks a lot about fannish retelling and reinterpretation.)

To Ride a Rising Storm, Moniquill Blackgoose, 2026 fantasy novel sequel to To Shape a Dragon's Breath. On the one hand, it's always a relief and a delight to read a book where I want to keep turning the pages and I don't have to shove myself through by percent targets, and it was lovely to be back in the Nampeshiweisit world and see how Kasaqua has grown and how Anequs's relationships and friendships are going. On the other hand, I kind of feel like... not that much actually happened in this book, until [redacted] at the end? Like, we didn't really see any more of the world, or learn that much more about skiltakraft. I guess we got a (legendary) account of how the hurricane-turning was supposed to work. And I might have just been wrong in thinking it was going to be the kind of series (like say the Temeraire series or the Kushiel books) that explores the map of its AU world - I think Blackgoose's interest is focused on Wampanoag New England, which seems totally fair seeing as that's her own people. And I liked the new characters. (But they're all so talky! Everyone stop philosophizing and concretize your conflicts please! Like, some of this could play out symbolically!) Also though just to be clear I would happily read another one or three or five or ten of these, and I really did appreciate what Blackgoose did with the relationship arcs, good stuff.

Project Hail Mary, 2026 film. I thought they did a good job adapting the book and it made a nice movie. In particular good jobs with the visual design and with keeping their eye on what kind of story they were trying to tell and making sure they told that story.
