Elysium, Jennifer Marie Brissett, 2014. This one has been on my to-read list for awhile (about 5 years, says the list) and it's interesting stuff. I suggested it for book club which succeeded in getting me to finally read it but means I now have to write about it for book club, which I am stalling on by writing about it here. [SPOILERS] The thing Tamsyn Muir is doing for fun in Harrow, putting the characters into increasingly fanfic-tropey AUs, or maybe the thing Kristin Cashore is doing in Jane, Unlimited, seeing what different stories could play out of the same setup in different genres, Brissett is doing here for more complicated reasons, which, ugh, I suppose I'm going to have to actually put into coherent sentences for book club. Blah blah whether you think it's anchored in the front, the back, or the middle, Doylist Watsonian blah blah blah. Sorry anyone who is curious what the actual sentences would look like, maybe I'll add them as a comment if they manage to exist at some point. Anyways, I thought it was worthwhile, and I am now keen to read Brissett's second novel, which just came out in October. (I will attempt to write a more useful post about that one if I manage to read it while it's still nominating season...) (ETA: I have become aware of a content spoiler for her 2021 book that has made me decide against reading it at this time.)
