The Dire Days of Willowweep Manor
Sep. 8th, 2021 08:25 pmThe Dire Days of Willowweep Manor, Shaenon Garrity and Christopher Baldwin. I was extremely excited when I saw that Garrity and Baldwin were doing a graphic novel together - I've been a fan of each of them since Narbonic and Bruno respectively (god, remember when "webcomics" was, like, Bruno, Sluggy, GPF, and PVP? dude), although I have to admit I fell off of Skin Horse at some point, and I never picked up the new Spacetrawler. (But graphic novels are just so much more manageable than webcomics, in terms of having to remember what's going on, unless of course one wants to take the Girl Genius approach and completely give up hope of remembering what's going on and just sort of enjoy it from week to week as a shiny object...) Anyways this sounded terrific ("fan of gothic romance novels finds herself in one... or is she") and it was so good. So funny, and the concept was exactly the right mix of clever and cool and ridiculous, and I love Baldwin's expressive faces and everyone's giant round eyes (except for characters who are Tired and get eyelids), and Haley is a great main character, and, anyways, highly recommended if you like either Garrity or Baldwin, or sff action-adventure comedy at all. Q also read it and enjoyed it if anyone is curious whether their kids might like it.
