Dilili in Paris
Oct. 9th, 2019 03:58 pmIntriguing animated movie, featuring flat stylized characters against partly-photographic backgrounds, and a who's-who of anyone famous who ever passed through turn-of-the-century Paris. Including people who weren't named but were clearly intended to Be Someone, most of whom I didn't recognize, although I think I did spot Oscar Wilde, and also people and scenes from a bunch of famous paintings. The plot and dialogue were pretty stilted but the kids seemed to enjoy it well enough. Unfortunately it was somewhat ruined for me by the villains, whose big hooked noses and child-stealing made me have to ask myself whether I was watching anti-semitic stereotypes, and whose evil plan to force the girls of Paris to wear chador-like black capes and crawl around subserviently made me have to ask myself whether I was watching anti-hijab propaganda. I didn't want to have to consider either of those questions while playing spot-the-art-history-easter-egg at a PG movie, and I wish (giving them the benefit of the doubt) they'd been a little more careful with their visual language. :( [ETA: also note for animal harm, an excuse is needed to go visit Louis Pasteur and it's not pasteurization.]
