Chronin Vol 1: The Knife At Your Back, the first half of a graphic novel duology by Alison Wilgus. Time-traveling cross-dressing samurai! This was so good and I can't wait for the second half to come out in September. I don't want to say too much about it outside of a spoiler cut because I really enjoyed the way the story unfolded but it's awesome both for what it's doing sfnally as a time-travel story and for the character interactions.

Major spoilers:Ok, this is basically just a list of things I loved and want to scream about. Possibly my favorite thing is Mirai and Hatsu's solidarity around/despite the whole Kuji situation. I love their friendship and mutual support/assistance and the scene where Mirai shows Hatsu the manga is *so good* (and it's so important to, like, this whole big story about who gets to love a historical period and why and what does it mean to see yourself in a story or in history and want to connect to it). Thirsty bisexual Gilbert is also fun (that "*you're* from the future too?!" panel is hilarious, there are some really great faces in this book) although wow, I strongly suspect there's stuff he's not telling Mirai. (If he's from 2050, surely he heard about a party of undergrads a few years back who never came back from the very time period he's studying... why isn't he like "holy shit you're one of the Columbia Six"...) Mirai being exhausted and trying to remember when historical events actually happened is the most realistic, relatable time travel moment ever (it always gets me when characters are like "oh yes of course this specific sporting event we must be on this exact date" and I'm like... I can remember my own anniversary because we picked a day for its mnemonic properties? I have to look up the years for basically everything but WWI?). I can't wait to see who/why the timeline has changed and what that's going to mean for everyone and what kinds of choices Mirai/Kuji/everyone are going to have to make.
