An Accident of Stars, Foz Meadows. I know of Meadows as a repeat Fan Writer nominee and maybe I put this on my list from hearing about it in her bio? My note says "feminist portal fantasy" and that's a pretty good description. Our high-school protagonist gets promptly involved in the battles and politics of the fantasy kingdoms she's portalled into; Meadows does not hold back on there being real, heavy-duty consequences, both for the protag and others. I liked that most of the characters are women, occupying a wide range of types and roles, and then there's a couple of token dudes, who for some reason it's always totally relevant to mention how pretty they are. Ahahaha. It's the first half of a duology, and I'm looking forward to reading the second one, although I think you could plausibly stop at the end of this one and feel like you'd read a reasonably well-endpointed story, except for a deliberate dangling mystery.

The Spymaster's Apprentice, Karen Healey and Robyn Fleming. Novella sequel to The Empress of Timbra; I impulsively bought it after determining the library didn't have it and then it turned out in the author's note in the end that it had been part of the Empress of Timbra Kickstarter and I apparently already had access to it, if I had thought to look for that one email lost in my inbox back in May. So that was dumb but probably not even the dumbest thing I did that day, honestly. Anyways this is a lot of fun and it was great to spend some more time with Taver and see how he's doing in a couple of years.
