Pacific Rim Uprising
Apr. 6th, 2018 05:13 pmI figured this movie was a pretty safe bet - if it was dumb, I could just admire John Boyega's face for two hours - and, you know, it *was* dumb, but it was dumb and fun and I've always been fond of Giant Stompys, so definitely worth it. (And it passed the Bechdel Test!)
The very short summary:
Jake & Nate: this is actually a movie about a heartwarming reunion of exes after a bad breakup!
Gottlieb: could *we* have a heartwarming reunion after our breakup?
Newt: no.
Slightly longer, this is the sort of movie where all the experts are conveniently taken out of commission, and a rag-tag team of underdogs has to step up to save the day, some of them being slightly more rag-tag than others (leading to some nice Iceman/Maverick style F/F tension between Secondary Lead and Obligatory Classmate Rival, which I hope someone is writing, although I haven't looked yet). The Evil Plan and the Good Counterplan were both a bit thin, but more or less basically coherent within the cartoon physics of the movieverse. I was pissed that they killed off Favorite Legacy Character, but pleased with the introduction of Badass Engineer, always one of my favorite character types.
The only thing that I think they really failed at was that I *could not* keep track of which plucky underdogs were in which stompy robots, somewhat muddling the drama of the final battle. We really needed more disambiguating design elements, not great work there, design team.
