2017 short fiction - Uncanny Jan-June
Jan. 20th, 2018 11:12 amDoing Uncanny next, because I ran out of gas before getting to it last year, and they effectively did the thing on me where getting me to make a small commitment (I backed the "Disabled People Destroy" Kickstarter) created a feeling of investment that got me to make a bigger commitment (prioritizing their magazine) so here I am.
Uncanny doesn't post wordcounts but the non-short-stories here I either looked up on Rocketstackrank or ran through a word counter myself.
Rising Star, Stephen Graham Jones. Time travel research proposal. I feel like Asimov could have written this 60 years ago, except for it having women scientists. (Why rec it then, you ask. I dunno, it amused me?)
With Cardamom I'll Bind Their Lips, Beth Cato. A young apprentice witch deals with ghosts.
And Then There Were (N-One), Sarah Pinsker. This is fucking brilliant, a woman at a convention of alternate-reality universes of herself. NOVELLA.
Sun, Moon, Dust. Ursula Vernon, so of course it's good. A young man inherits a magic sword, what happens next will charm you.
Small Changes Over Long Periods of Time, K.M. Szpara. Trans vampire! I had already read this when it came out but was happy to reread it. Really good. NOVELETTE.
