Had the world's most stereotypical suburban mom temper tantrum and committed mass culling upon The Socks. Somehow my children had between them three different sets of the same socks, in two or possibly three different sizes, meaning that I never knew whose goddamn socks they were when folding the laundry, argh, socks.

In the course of buying them each a new set of socks, I made the amazing discovery that apparently I can't tell their socks apart because in sock-sizing terms, they have the *same size feet* - Q is wearing a 9 shoe and J is wearing a 13 shoe and there seems to be a sock size that goes from 9 to 2 1/2. Which, eureka, stop the fucking presses, no wonder I'm so confused! So I guess I didn't need to buy new socks at all, I could have just assigned out the existing socks according to some memorable rule, but, whatever, I have such hatred at this point towards those confounding little suckers that it's honestly a pleasure to heap them up for the rag bag.

Such is the exciting life of the housewife.

I think having everyone wear the same size socks is an overall win. No need to sort ever at all.

did you do the xkcd survey thing? ne of the questions was whether you'd ever thrown out all your socks and bought a whole bunch of the same type to avoid sock drama. one of the potential answers was "no, but omg that's a good idea and I'm going to do it now"

I try to use a lingerie bag for the baby socks (well, toddler socks, now, because I do not have, and will never again have, a baby) and keep trying to convince Kaia to use one for her socks. After a long time of not caring, she now sometimes wants matching socks, and if they're not in the same load of laundry (or in the laundry at all) that can't happen. I really do not want to police kid clothes--especially since Kaia has a distinctive Style, and I want to encourage that as a creative personal expression--but I do have some lines (e.g. no, that torn dress has now become "play clothes," not appropriate for school) and I know they are partially influenced by Societal Expectations of Good Momming, etc., etc. But a lot of it's down to intentionality, too. If she wears non-matching socks, I want it to be because she decides to wear non-matching socks, not because she's wearing the last two clean socks in her drawer.

Sorry to hijack your LJ, but apparently I, too, have long-suppressed Sock Issues.

> Sock Issues

Socks are a pain, which is why I try to wear them as infrequently as possible. Stupid winter. :^)

Move to Singapore! Best choice I ever made in terms of my relationship with socks.
