fic post, old and new, plus statistics
Jul. 28th, 2014 09:28 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
In honor of getting all of my old fanfic uploaded to AO3, both the vanishing point-era stuff and 2007-2009 only-on-lj stuff, two never-before-on-the-internet stories.
Born is the very first piece of fanfiction I ever finished, a Chronicles of Prydain what-if. I mention it not as recommended reading (I don't; I have apparently learned something about writing since 2001, go me) but because I think it's funny that it's high-concept gen about death, like, apparently all those slightly later early stories about boys kissing were really just a detour before I got back to my core competencies ::grin::.
Thirty Is A Labyrinth, on the other hand, is the first new 30fic story in five years (!), and is about Sarah from Labyrinth, and her student loans. 1500 words.
And yes, I have not given up on the 30fic project and do still hope to finish the remaining nine stories. (Two of which have been through multiple false starts, two of which I've thought about a lot in my head but not written down, one of which I've just never had a good sense of the throughline, and the last four of which are more or less up for grabs, so if anyone has a character they're dying to see thirtyfied, feel free to tell me in a comment and I'll see if it sparks an idea.)
And now, the thing I really wanted all my old stuff uploaded to AO3 for - statistics! 90 stories and over 206000 words! So my average story is a bit under 2300 words long. and hate the bright stillness of the noon, which was up on the archive before this whole import thing, is still the longest, at 12500 words, and is the only one to clear 10K. Gull is the second-shortest, at 173 words (and is still, to my biased eye, pretty much perfect). And there is a complete gap chronologically between 2003 and 2007. I had sort of known that, I guess, but had mostly forgotten about it, or how long it was.

Date: 2014-07-31 08:28 pm (UTC)I'm LittleRachelBerry over on AO3, and I just left a comment on one of your Huge fics (my computer automatically corrects this to 'tics', which is rather amusing). You're such a good writer, I am jealous, and I bow to you. I just rewatched the show after I found my DVD in the basement (moving to a new apartment and things of that nature), and now I remember how important it was to me in my high school years and how it actually shaped me as a person.
Soooooo :) do you have any plans to write another Huge fic anytime soon? Because I'm dying for something new. Even though the show aired four summers ago, I'm still not over it, and I probably never will be; it's THAT good. I would really love something focused on Shay, if not her, then maybe Poppy or Trent. But preferably Shay :) she's so cruel and I would adore a fic that doesn't try to change her but does explain her. Something that shows maybe an ounce of sympathy in her body, or explains why she is the way she is. Maybe something with her daughter or Dr. Rand (since they're so uncomfortable with each other)? I don't know if it could somehow be a part of your 30fic challenge, but since you said there's four or so that are up for grabs, I would love it so much if you could do something like that for me. And maybe I could try to write something for you in return. I haven't published anything on AO3 yet, but I do have four on my FFN page (same username. Although I haven't published on there in like three years...)
Okay. Anyway, this was extremely long and creepy and anon-y. But yeah! Just let me know. I'd love Huge to be a part of your 30fic challenge in general. Thanks!

Date: 2014-08-01 02:44 am (UTC)Probably not Shay though. ::grin:: She's just too mean to my darlings. Although... hahaha, actually, I totally have a story fragment from November 2010 that explains why she is the way she is:
***
Everybody who was there agreed afterward that it wasn't Piznarski's fault, not at all - they were bad pitches and he'd been perfectly right not to swing at them, and even if the last one was maybe really a strike, George had called it, Piznarski was ready, George had told them to play ball, Carter had started her windmill, and Shay had absolutely no business coming into the batter's box to yell at him for not trying hard enough. Everyone agreed.
So when Carter's pitch had arced towards the plate and Piznarski, eyes glued forwards, had quite reasonably brought the bat around to meet it, he could hardly be blamed for the unexpected and alarming interjection of Shay's head into his swing, which, in the event, with the force of the collision, popped right off her shoulders in a shower of sparks and rolled across the home plate area towards the infield, strewing bits of tiny gears and levers along the sand as it went. Her now-headless body teetered and collapsed forward as well, beginning to smoke gently from the neck.
"Huh," Will said into the shocked silence, "So Shay's a robot. Explains a lot."
***
In the immediate wake of the incident, the campers began to sort themselves into supportive clumps and pairings - Chloe and Trent collapsed weeping into each other's arms, Carter and Pizarski began a nervous consultation on Fault Comma Not Our.
Amber looked imploringly towards George to do something. George, noticing that he was being called upon to act, announced that the game was cancelled, which rather, they thought, failed to address the key aspects of the situation, namely, what on earth should they do about Shay?
Alistair collected her head and offered it to Becca hopefully.
"I read fantasy novels," she said, "That doesn't make me know how to fix an android."
"You knew to call it an android," he pointed out, but she peered blankly into the severed neck.
"You'd need a soldering iron," she said, "And some way to test all the microcircuitry - I'm a LARPer," she said, again, when they didn't seem to get it. "This is not my geekdom."
"I think we're ignoring some important points," Will said. "Who else here is a robot? Dr. Rand? Poppy? George?"
"Not Poppy," Becca said, "She can't be, she's too… fluffy."
"Dr. Rand, though," Ian said thoughtfully, "No, think about it. Have you ever seen her eat? Or laugh?"
***
... and that's all I have of that, never figured out where I wanted it to go past the initial gag. Is Rand short for Robot Android? Is George not freaked out because he is one too? Does anyone succeed in repairing Shay? ::shrugs::

Date: 2014-08-01 02:37 pm (UTC)If you can't choose a kid for a thirtyfic, why not do them all? Like a couple lines for each one? I think that'd be cool. I still love Trent though, which is weird because he isn't even in like, my top five favorite characters on the show. I just always found him kind of interesting. And of course, Ian, my love :)
(but if you could somehow find it in you to write sympathetic!Shay or work her into it somehow, even if it's just two lines, I would probably die. I know it's a challenge, and I don't even know if it'd be possible for me to do it, but I have faith in you because you're AWESOME. Pleeeeeease? I'm begging.)
