Target brand cake-frosting-in-a-can: NOT VEGETARIAN. Lard with sugar mixed in. Fortunately I realized this *before* we fed it to any vegetarians. But it had honestly never occurred to me that cake frosting might come in a non-vegetarian variety, and so probably I am not the last person to be aware of this?

It's much less common than it used to be, although I see lard making a comeback since it's less processed than some of the alternatives. People used to get so offended by me checking ingredients on boxes they'd put out, but there used to be animal shortening in everything. Oreos, almost all snack cakes and other long-shelf-life commercial baked goods, etc.

But I appreciate people checking and learning about these things. :D

Yeah, when I was living in ML there was once a pecan pie on the free table that a succession of people took, discovered it contained partially hydrogenated lard, and put back.

partially hydrogenated lard is one of those substances that always fills me with a special awe and horror. before i discovered it, it wouldn't have occurred to me that there'd be such a thing as hyperreal shortening.

Were they all reading the ingredients or was there someone gleefully telling them about the partially hydrogenated lard?

Reading the ingredients. It had words on it, so we read them...

Wow, that would never have even occurred to me. Fortunately we mostly make our own frosting (or rather, my sisters do, since they do most of the baking — we actually go through butter and powdered sugar at a ridiculous rate) so it probably has never come up.
