book review: Unspoken
Jan. 19th, 2013 01:56 pmUnspoken is the first in a new trilogy by Sarah Rees Brennan. I liked it - I loved the characters, there are some really funny lines, it's a nice set-up and exploration of a classic trope (soul bonds! ish) and I look forward to seeing how it plays out. It's not perfect, though, the pacing was a little jarring, some of the emotional beats changed a little too quickly or out of nowhere, and there were a couple of cases of "I cannot possibly tell you anything, we're in the first third of the book!" "Now I must give you an extensive info-dump, we're in the last third of the book!" But I expect that to be less of an issue in the second one now that the basic premise is laid out. Definitely looking forward to the next one. Right now I am shipping Kami/Rusty, Angela/Holly, and Lynburns can go fuck themselves, although I think Rusty is pretty clearly being set up to be the Book Two guy and Jared is the endgame guy. Which is fine - it's a novel, maximum passion, it'll be great when they finally sort out their misunderstandings. I'd just like Kami to get to have a good time with a real sweetheart before the inevitable high drama relationship closure stuff.
