book recs: Black Heart and Red Shirts

I read Black Heart, the third book of Holly Black's Curseworkers Trilogy, awhile ago and never wrote it up. Excellent! She did a bunch of things I found very satisfying, and only one thing I didn't totally buy. Series as a whole is highly recommended.

Redshirts by John Scalzi is hilarious and clever. Do you like Star Trek? Meta? Fanfic? Then you will appreciate this book. One bit of vaguely spoilery criticism, I thought the Codas were dumb and added nothing to the book and it should have just ended where the main story ended.

So I wound up "reading" Black Heart (can you count it as reading when it happens in as short a period as I did it?) after you started mentioning the series - what was the one thing you didn't totally buy?
