She didn't cry; she was happily flattening playdoh. She didn't actually say "c'mon, Mom, quit hugging me, I'm busy here," but it's possible she was thinking it.

I didn't cry either; too excited and proud for my big, big girl.

It is actually her lunchbag! It is enormous (you could pack lunch for our whole family in there) but she liked it when we went to pick one out, so, hey.

Neoprene lunchbag! There's a little owl-shaped icepack inside. She picked it out. ::grin::

My theory was that having a big confident monster on one's shirt could maybe be a nice thing if someone was feeling scared or shy.

(Also this outfit apparently reads as boy, to at least one of the teachers in the other classroom. I'd thought her hair was maybe past the point where she could pass but I guess not.)

Shirley Temple

It seems to me that those Shirley Temple curls and that Shirley Temple grin and tilt of the head put her firmly in the girl category.

I would say it's a neutral-gender outfit, but so many girls that age are, because of themselves or their parents, in *super* girly outfits that I guess I can see why one might think boy. But for me I'd say the hair is absolutely the tell: definitely girl. Weird teacher.

The hair was probably a lot limper by lunchtime?

Well, the first day of school tends to be a day to pull out the pretty dress, or at least the big time pink, so, yeah, I think I can see where it codes at least androgynous.

That's fair. I suppose by next year she'll have internalized all that stuff and will want a pink dress for her first day too. I'm glad to have gotten one year of free rein - I feel like a monster says "I'm ready for anything!" much more than a pretty dress does...

What an exciting adventure to be starting! She looks very proud of herself, and should be.

Yay, Junie! Yay, Mommy!

I too love the monster shirt and the owl lunchbag.

I am going to miss the part of childhood where I can still basically get her to wear whatever I think is cool. (It probably helps that I'm pushing monster shirts rather, than, like, oxford shirts or something.)

One giant leap for Junie-kind. :) I want that lunchbag!! (and the t-shirt, that would liven up lab meetings a good bit... ;)

Lunchbag: Target. ::grin:: Monster shirt... I totally think grown-up clothing would benefit from more monsters.
