fencing again
Oct. 6th, 2002 10:38 pmIt was just so artificial, Harry thought. When you had a basilisk head the size of a small car coming at you, you didn't give it a little poke, you did exactly what he had done: put both hands on the sword and rammed.
"But don't you want to know how to do it right," Hermione asked him.
Harry didn't answer, and it had been Ron who said it. "I figured he already did," Ron said, "Killed a basilisk after all."
Harry winced a little hearing it out loud. Halfway through the day's lesson he had been told that all forms of the phrase "when I killed the basilisk" were henceforth banned from the practice room if he wanted the lessons to continue. He wasn't sure he did, but Sirius would be so disappointed... he had resolved to stick it out, basilisk-free.
In my own fencing news, my problem is not that it feels unnatural to hit so gently, but that it feels weird trying to hit people at all. In my deeply non-confrontational mindset, my natural response to finding myself in a conflict is to back off... instead I'm supposed to *stab at* somebody? Or, well, poke. I sort of gingerly wave at.
