"Did you really think you could just give him back?"
Kate is used to being hunted; she knows Claire is skulking around; she jumps anyways.
"What's done is done," Claire continues, "He thinks you're his mother, and you left him."
"I left him with your mother," Kate says.
"My mother? My mother's been in a coma for five years." Claire shakes her head suddenly, almost a twitch. "Eight years, I guess. It's not enough to take my baby, then you give him to someone, you don't even know who, could have been anybody, one of them -"
"She's not - " Kate stops, breathes. "I met Carole at Christian Sheppard's funeral. I'm sure she's who she says she is - she sued Oceanic over you. Aaron is safe with her."
It tastes like a lie; Aaron is in the one place Claire can surely find him, if they do get off the island, and Kate's not sure that's safe at all.
"What did you even think was going to happen?" Claire asks. "You were going to rescue me, and, what? You'd just go away and never see him again? Joint custody, every other weekend? We'd all play house and live together and Aaron would have two mommies?"
Whatever you want, Kate would have said, on the Ajira flight, bracing for it like the crash she was anticipating. Whatever's best for Aaron, that's what we both want.
All those years running and it's instinct to her now: it flashes into her mind already half-planned, how she'll snatch Aaron, if they ever get back, take him and stay a step ahead of this crazy Claire until…
She hasn't thought of Kevin in years, but now she does.
Claire is still staring at her, suspicion like an ugly mask over the young woman Kate remembers, and Kate can't find the voice to answer her.
