Am online from my living room! After telling me my service wouldn't start until 21 October, I got email saying it was ready... today! Add one wireless router and witness the power of a fully operational net connection.

NYNEX? Wasn't NYNEX taken over by Bell Atlantic, now known as Verizon? Or does it still exist as a separate division, or something like that? I'm pretty sure that it's just called Verizon up in Plattsburgh, though.

Just to be stodgy, I remember back when we got our phone service from New York Telephone, before it was completely subsumed into NYNEX.

NYNEX (fuckers!) was in fact taken over by Bell Atlantic, which happened while I was living in Cambridge. I wanted to call the new company BANEX (or BANE-X), but it didn't catch on. When Bell Atlantic and GTE merged, they called the new company Verizon, but I assume that most of the people providing service in New England are still old-time NYNEX (fuckers!) employees.

I don't actually remember New England Telephone & Telegraph, from back before the first merger, but we must have had service from them on Cape Cod in the early eighties.

As to why I swear every time I mention the name NYNEX (fuckers!), that's a long story, but the short version is the astonishing number of times they screwed us over, both at home and at work, when we were living in Boston and working for NetMarket. Highlights include the time when we were trying to get a third line installed at home (there were three of us living there, so this made sense), and they said it was done, but it wasn't working, and when we called them to complain, the next day the second line wasn't working any more either, and it took another week or two before they got it all straightened out; and the time they just mysteriously turned off our fax line at work, for no reason at all, in the middle of the day, at a time when we frequently did important business by fax, and could not explain why when we contacted them (as in everyone involved said "I don't know, and don't have any way to find out" when we asked why it had been turned off), but at least they turned it back on reasonably quickly. (Later that week, as I recall.)

But we digress. :^)

Wow! Not only does optimism prove valid, but optimism is actually overly pessimistic! I think that restores my faith in life ;-).
