My very own state representative voted no. Not that I've voted for this guy before, but you know what? I think I will now. I'm having, like, civic pride here. Somebody "representing" me actually *represented* me. And is, like, an admirable, equal-rights supporting guy. And I'm so proud and happy about that.

On the other hand I feel strangely underwhelmed by the real actual live first gay marriage in the United States. It's hella cool of the SF mayor, but I'm pretty sure CA passed a DOMA-type ballot act a few years ago, which would also make it pretty straightforwardly illegal. So it's a wonderful act of civil disobedience, but it doesn't feel quite like legal recognition.

On the other other hand, dude, 51 years together and finally getting to get married. Whatever else happens, Gavin Newsom did a good deed. Okay, now I'm whelmed. Even if they immediately get stomped down by the state, for a little while there will have been a very right thing. Dude.

From what I've read, Newsom indicated that he was doing this in accordance with the state constitution, which trumps any foolish ballot initiative the voters of CA passed. I can't find the quote now, but something to the effect of, "When I took office, I swore to uphold the California constitution, and this inequality is in violation of that constitution, so I'm rectifying it."
