The Tomb of Dragons, Katherine Addison, 2025 trilogy conclusion. Previous one here. I haven't been able to make myself read any Hugo homework recently but I've postponed this a couple of times while trying to make myself prioritize said homework and it came up again and it was like, oh, I could read that, I know more or less what it will be like and it will be a pleasant read, and, lo, so it came to pass. A lot to be said for that. (I am very much in one of those moods where I'm like "what if I gave up on sff and just read KJ Charles romances for a month" but this kind of sff is fine. Possibly I just really don't want to do any more homework.)

One spoiler:

Kind of weird that Addison scrapped the romance she'd been building for two books to announce that guy was Actually Straight No Really but here's this other new guy, but, enh, whatever, I know she's a Sherlock Holmes person and I guess the temptation to settle her MC into a sort of Holmes and Watson pairing was too much? Or once she wrote herself into Celehar leaving Amalo she wanted a love interest who could go with him and not the one she had come up with when she thought he was going to stay in Amalo? Or I suppose those Wolf books she cowrote were also characterized by frustrating the romantic hopes of the reader so maybe she just has a massive no-romo agenda. I don't know, I never cared that much about the Celehar/Iana ship but I don't think people who read as a slow-burn romance were deluding themselves, really seems to me like either she was being deliberately misleading or she decided to change course somewhere.
