Hugos artists

Pro Artists: Kuri Huang did a book cover I liked. Galen Dara hasn't updated their website in ages but seems to have a bunch of new work on their instagram so I'm going to assume they did something qualifying. Similarly, I like Alyssa Winans' stuff; is any of it from 2024, who knows, but odds seem good. I recall in past years that people sometimes put together webpages or "lightboxes" of qualifying art from the year but I couldn't find anything like that for 2024.

Fan Artists: I took a quick look through the spreadsheet and Geneva Bowers' stuff is awesome. I also really like Autun Purser's ecology illustrations, and Michelle Morrell seems to have designed a bunch of cross-stitch patterns for Seattle Worldcon, which I guess is somewhat like the sort of "service art" I'm usually dubious about awarding but in this case seems cute and fun.

Thanks for these recs!

Geneva Bowers is one of my favorite artists of any kind. I think I’ll probably nominate her in both Pro and Fan, ’cause I’m not sure whether she qualifies in Pro this year. She Kickstarted/self-published a new art book in 2024 (_Dreams: The Art of Geneva Bowers_), along with a bunch of art on Patreon, but I have no idea what percentage of her income any of that supplies, nor whether self-published books and Patreons can count as professional (by Hugo standards). She does qualify for Fan, inasmuch as at least some of her Patreon posts are publicly visible, so I’ll definitely put her there.

(Insert yet another segment of years-long extended grumble about the Pro and Fan Artist categories, sigh.)

Agreed that the whole Pro/Fan thing is a mess. I went ahead and added Bowers to my Pro artists on the grounds that I had slots and if she qualifies there, great.

ISFDB says Winans did cover art for Brides of High Hill and Floating Hotel in 2024.

I failed to follow these links in time to do anything about them, but I like both pieces, especially the Yuumei book art, that's awesome.
