I did not come up with this theory - I remember reading it somewhere about the first movie, but I have no idea where now, probably Tumblr - and honestly I don't think the writers/directors/etc intended it that way, I think the logic was probably more like "we should have a mixed-gender cast". But why let writer intentions stop us from making a more interesting interpretation, is my feeling. :)
