The Marvels
Dec. 2nd, 2023 02:57 pmFinally saw The Marvels, yay! I thought it was a lot of fun, which was what I was looking for - chances for the characters to have some good moments and to see how they all interacted with each other. Honestly, so much of all of these superhero movies for me is how much I want to spend more time with the characters. I haven't seen the latest Thor or Guardians or Doctor Strange (except the alternate universe scene) because I just don't like or care about any of their main characters that much. (Except Groot, who doesn't like Groot.) But Carol, Monica, *and* Kamala? Heck yes! Spoilers The training montage was great, the singing planet was great ("he's bilingual"), evacuation via having everyone eaten by cats was a deeply unexpected third-act usage of a first-act set-up. I was excited to get canonical confirmation of Carol spending time with Maria during the Blip. I have already had this discussion with C - I lean towards being grateful for scraps/excited about the breadcrumbs we got that people could use to build out interesting fanworks, but I'm also sympathetic to wishing we could get, like, a single on-screen kiss. (But oh, such breadcrumbs... I would like every Carol/alternate-universe "Binary" Maria, please! There's so much inherent drama in Carol having wasted her chance with her Maria, finally come back only to lose her to cancer, and then... meeting an alternate version of her with whom she doesn't share the same history? Maybe *some* shared history, and then that Maria lost her Carol?? So many possibilities. Also keen to read some "Valkyrie comforting Carol after losing Maria", which I read as implied to have happened. And to see more of how Kamala's relationship with her family has changed after them having this up-close exposure to the superhero world. It was so neat to see them again... I suppose there's no chance of a second season of the TV series, alas....)
