ETA OH MY GOD WTF THE FILE 770 PAGE NOW SAYS "Tammy Coxen relayed a request to me from Hugo Administrator Dave McCarty to remove the post with the finalists released on the Chengdu Worldcon website today because “it was released in error and not correct.”" What the FUCK are they doing over there. Maybe some or all of this is wrong?? Are we having a La La Land/Moonlight moment here?? Yiiiiikes.

At last! The Chengdu official page wouldn't load for me so I pulled this from File 770 here.

Behind the cut with commentary!

BEST NOVEL

The Daughter of Doctor Moreau, Silvia Moreno-Garcia (Del Rey)
Nettle & Bone, T. Kingfisher (Tor Books)
Legends & Lattes, Travis Baldree (Tor Books)
The Spare Man, Mary Robinette Kowal (Tor Books)
Nona the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir (Tordotcom)
The Kaiju Preservation Society, John Scalzi (Tor Books)

Holy shit, no Babel. Do we think Kuang turned it down? (Due to the con being in Chengdu?) Do we think the Chinese government objects to Kuang (who I seem to recall has spoken in support of the Hong Kong protesters)? Is the whole China thing a red herring and did Hugo voters just genuinely think these were six better novels? (Did *Chinese* voters think these were six better novels? Is Babel even available in China? Is it inherently racist to try to speculate about how this year's demographics and context might be affecting the ballot? To be clear, if Chinese voters tended not to nominate Babel and thus it didn't make the ballot, I feel like that's a legitimate outcome, if disappointing to me.)

In other news, I have to read two of these (SMG and Kowal) and don't even know what to predict.

BEST NOVELLA

Even Though I Knew the End, C.L. Polk (Tordotcom)
Into the Riverlands, Nghi Vo (Tordotcom)
Ogres, Adrian Tchaikovsky (Solaris)
A Mirror Mended, Alix E. Harrow (Tordotcom)
Where the Drowned Girls Go, Seanan McGuire (Todotcom)
What Moves the Dead, T. Kingfisher (Tor Nightfire)

Ha! No Prayer for the Crown-Shy! Things are definitely being weird here but I like this one so I'm less suspicious. :) I have to read three of these (Tchaikovsky, Harrow, McGuire).

BEST NOVELETTE

If You Find Yourself Speaking to God, Address God with the Informal You, John Chu (Uncanny Magazine Issue 47)
The Difference Between Love and Time, Catherynne M. Valente (Solaris)
We Built This City, Marie Vibbert (Clarkesworld Issue 189)
The Space-Time Painte,r Hai Ya|时空画师 海漄|银河边缘0092022年5月
A Dream of Electric Mothers, Wole Talabi Culturescapes, Sternberg Press (CH)
Murder By Pixel: Crime and Responsibility in the Digital Darkness, SL Huang (Clarkesworld Issue 195)

I'm excited to see what I'm assuming is a Chinese story on here, and I hope we're able to get a translation in the packet! (Also I said we could expect to see that Valente.)

BEST SHORT STORY

“Upstart”, Lu Ban. (Clarkesworld Issue 195) |白色悬崖 鲁般|科幻世界2022年5月
“Zhurong on Mars”, Regina Kanyu Wang|火星上的祝融 王侃瑜|天涯2022年第5期
“On the Razor’s Edge”, Jiang Bo|命悬一线 江波|科幻世界2022年1月
“Rabbit Test”, Samantha Mills (Uncanny Magazine 2022.11-12)
“DIY”, John Wiswell (Tor Books)
“Resurrection”, Ren Qing |还魂 任青|(Future Fiction)/科幻世界杂志社

I continue to be excited to see what I'm assuming are Chinese authors in this category. (I should say I'm stripping out the Chinese from most things on this list to improve readability for myself, a person completely illiterate in Chinese, but leaving it in for stuff that I'm guessing was originally published in Chinese.)

BEST SERIES

The Scholomance, Naomi Novik (Del Rey)
The Locked Tomb, Tamsyn Muir (Tordotcom)
Children of Time Trilogy, Adrian Tchaikovsky (Pan Macmillan/Orbit)
October Daye, Seanan McGuire (DAW)
The Founders Trilogy, Robert Jackson Bennett (Del Rey)
Rivers of London, Ben Aaronovich (DAW Books Inc.) (DAW Books Inc.)

Yay, Scholomance! Looks like I'll be reading some Bennett if I have time.

BEST GRAPHIC STORY OR COMIC

Once & Future Vol 4: Monarchies in the UK, Kieron Gillen, Dan Mora (BOOM! Studios)
Saga, Vol. 10, Fiona Staples,Brian K. Vaughan, (Fonografiks) (Fonografiks|Image Comics)

What's not here: anything I'm excited about. :( Although my lack of excitement about Cyberpunk 2077 is just based on the title, maybe it's secretly cool.

LODESTAR AWARD OF BEST YOUNG ADULT BOOK

The Golden Enclaves, Naomi Novik
Dreams Bigger Than Heartbreak, Charlie Jane Anders
Akata Woman, Nnedi Okorafor
Bloodmarked, Tracy Deonn
Osmo Unknown and the Eightpenny Woods, Catherynne M. Valente
In the Serpents Wake, Rachel Hartman

Oh god I have to do so much reading. Full disclosure I already had Bloodmarked from the library once and bounced hard off the first chapter, I just couldn't make myself do it.

THE ASTOUNDING AWARD FOR BEST NEW WRITER (SPONSORED BY DELL MAGAZINES)

Liu Maijia|刘麦加|
Travis Baldree|特拉维斯·巴尔德里|
Everina Maxwell|埃弗里娜·麦克斯韦|
Xin Weimu|辛维木|
Isabel J Kim|伊莎贝尔·金|
Naseem Jamnia|纳西姆·詹妮亚|

This seems great - there's Kim! And Baldree is a great pick, coming on the scene with a viral novel like that, and I don't know who three of these people are which is also exciting! Oh, Jamnia is Bruising of Qilwa, I've had that on my to-reads for awhile. Xin Weimu seems to have written something called Nebula Xi, which may not have an English translation yet, and Liu Maijia... I'm not sure. *Very* eager to see what we'll get in the packet, and I'm also hoping people who are conversant with the Chinese SFF scene will start posting with info about who some of these people are and what their works are like.

Not being entirely sure what's going to be available makes it a little hard to say how much reading I'm going to end up doing, but I guess at a minimum I've got two novels, three novellas, at least one Tchaikovsky and Bennett, all of the Graphics, four Lodestars, and Qilwa? Ok then. I wonder what the deadline is going to be.
