Witch King, Martha Wells, 2023 novel. If you like the Raksura books, this feels very similar (except it's an all-new world so you don't have to be stressed about not being able to keep track of the dozens of Raksura minor characters). If you haven't read the Raksura books but you have read Murderbot, you'll probably like this as much as you like fantasy vs science fiction settings. *I* liked it a lot - extremely readable, I basically couldn't put it down. I love Wells' narrators and the ways they try to deal with the circumstances they find themselves in, and her worldbuilding - some fun stuff here with different kinds of magic - and she does such good work with setting/architecture/infrastructure, like, she is truly fantasy's best civil engineer and I will always enjoy that. I could see this being a standalone or turning into a trilogy and I hope we get the trilogy, I would very much like to spend more time with these people in this world.

Bonus if you've read it: this spoilery fan comic on tumblr.
