The Witness for the Dead, Katherine Addison. I was extremely excited about a new book in the Goblin Emperor world, and I enjoyed reading it! It's funny, in some ways it's very much the same kind of book as Angel of the Crows - murder mysteries and a detective running around solving them - but I enjoyed it a lot more, presumably because I was pleased by the little references to Goblin Emperor in a way I wasn't at all interested in the references to Sherlock Holmes. On the other hand, it didn't really feel like anything special - Goblin Emperor is such a gem of a book, a beloved comfort reread I doubt I'll ever get tired of, and I don't see myself wanting to reread this one. I mean, it was good! I liked a bunch of Addison's worldbuilding/world-expansion choices, and I like Celehar as a character, and I definitely want to read the next one (there's a direct sequel coming next year) - I feel like there was character-arc stuff that could use more resolution. But as long-awaited sequels go I felt like Hidden Palace was much more of a "we got ANOTHER ONE!" kind of outcome than this was.
