Entirely behind this cut. Massive spoilers, do not click if you don't want Avengers Endgame spoilers.
I really really liked it. I didn't expect to like it, after Infinity War (and AoU and Civil War) but it was epic and funny and profoundly power-fantasy wish-fulfillment fanservicey and it actually had a POV and an emotional arc and *it was a fucking clipshow episode and they made it great*.
I will probably write more later but a quick list of things I liked:
Tony's last words being "I am Iron Man". The way the memorial service was about how the whole thing started with that one movie and how big it is now. That he knows/we all pretty much know, when Strange tells him that if he tells him what happens it won't happen, and then when Strange holds up the one finger, that this is it, the one way.
That we also got a really big send-off for Steve - he got to wield the hammer! He got to be really funny! (and acknowledge how much we love his butt!) He got to go live a secret life with Peggy! He got to pass on the shield! (Yay Sam!Cap!) I also really liked that Carol's fight with Thanos did the close visual parallels to Steve's in Infinity War, positioning Carol as the "new Steve" of the MCU in some ways, the righteous hero.
I thought Clint and Natasha was about the best thing they could have done with the soul stone setup, and I liked that Nat got to do a big heroic self-sacrifice. I also really liked the whole BruceHulk fusion, that was a neat next thing to do with the character (and I hope we'll get a cameo of either Bruce or Pepper stepping into Tony's role with Peter).
The end with allllll the characters showing up to the battle was so fucking epic, damn. This was *such* a long spear movie and wow they landed it. Also just the whole structure - the way we're all expecting them to go fight Thanos and they do that in like the first five minutes and then it just crazily opens up the plot, like, okay, *now* what? And then now what is a time heist, which is about the most fun thing to say ever, and so many time travel jokes, yay. But I like that the MCU feels so wide open now too. Like, the big three are gone, or in Thor's case... cameoing in Guardians 3?? and the new flagship characters are Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and I guess Doctor Strange, well, two out of three of those are really exciting.
Ok, some things I didn't like:
The fat joke with Thor, bleeeeah. That was actually the one thing I was spoiled for - that someone has gotten fat as part of their PTSD and it's played as a joke and the theater will laugh - and so I was sort of braced for it but ugh.
Tony's random fight with Steve at the beginning - I was having trouble following it but did we need it?
Back to things I did like - I like that Thor's big time-travel what-if was the chance to talk to his mom. So many movies are about Dads - I mean, in fact this movie was about Dads, but I thought it worked, since we needed some kind of unifying POV and arc - but I just really liked that for once someone had unfinished business with their mom.
Mixed feelings about Nebula's arc. I was hoping she would get to kill Thanos, but getting to face off against her former self and Gamora was pretty good. Would have liked a little more time/space for her in the final battle - show us her feelings about making the decision to shoot her former self, as Chaos suggested - and I was also actually confused about what happens to Gamora at the end, I thought she was maybe still around but Chaos thought because of the soul stone she couldn't actually come back permanently, and got ashed with the rest of Thanos's army?
I would really like fic about Nat's five years as post-apocalyptic Nick Fury running a team that includes Okoye, the raccoon, Gamora, and Captain fucking Marvel.
