Cross Fire, Fonda Lee, sequel to last year's Norton-nominated Exo. This is both a) also a good book and b) an excellent *sequel*, really felt like we were not just retreading the same territory/conflicts but in a new exciting situation that also turned the old conflicts in interesting ways. I love the realistic-feeling history of these, like, whatever you might think about colonization/collaboration/etc, all of that *has in fact happened* and is the reality for all further choices. I could see her deciding to write a third one or ending the story here and both would feel satisfying. Who knows what else I'll read in the next six months but I could definitely see myself nominating this for the Lodestar, this is high-quality YA SF.
Paper Girls Vol 4. I guess this is going to be a series where I swing back and forth on how into it I am... volume 3 just didn't grab me somehow, but this one had me hooked again. I guess if they're going to [spoilers] (and also [spoilers]) they're going to keep me on the line... I know what I'm a sucker for. Well, but also, aside from all that, I feel like the pendulum has swung back away from "they're just throwing in random shit" and back in the direction of "things might be adding up to a coherent story", although, yes, a story that is still wearing a lot of random accessories, but there might be bones down there under them. Will I nominate this as a graphic work? Maybe?
