2018 Hugo awards!!
Aug. 20th, 2018 01:06 amWinners (and also my first-place votes and predictions and commentary) behind the cut.
Best Novel
Prediction: Stone Sky
My first-place vote: Stone Sky
Winner: Stone Sky (N.K. Jemisin gave a magnificent speech, speech of the night. A giant shiny heavy metal middle finger, I think it was? And that *shawl*. Anyways, this was the thing on the ballot I cared most about and I'm really, really pleased to see her get the HISTORIC THREEPEAT SHE DESERVED, WOOO.)
Best Novella
Prediction: All Systems Red
My first-place vote: And Then There Were (N-One)
Winner: All Systems Red
Best Novelette
Prediction: Secret Life of Bots
My first-place vote: Small Changes
Winner: Secret Life of Bots
Best Short Story
Prediction: Authentic Indian Experience
My first-place vote: Authentic Indian Experience
Winner: Authentic Indian Experience (I would have been shocked if it hadn't.)
Best Series
Prediction: ??
My first-place vote: Books of the Raksura
Winner: World of the Five Gods, Lois McMaster Bujold
(I'm not excited about this outcome, I would have liked to see it go to any of Wells or Brennan or Bennett, but Curse of Chalion really is a beautiful book, so, I guess I can't be surprised it's a favorite of a lot of people.)
Best Related Work
Prediction: Either No Time To Spare or Lit Fuse.
My first-place vote: No Time to Spare.
Winner: No Time to Spare (Well, I'm clearly pleased with which way that went.)
Best Graphic Story
Prediction: Monstress Vol 2
My first-place vote: My Favorite Thing is Monsters
Winner: Monstress (My second favorite, and definitely deserved.)
Best Dramatic Presentation (Long Form)
Prediction: Shape of Water
My first-place vote: Get Out
Wonder Woman (I am v. surprised by this result, although it was my own second-place vote. Really, really did not see that happening.)
Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form)
Prediction: ??
My first-place vote: "USS Callister"
The Good Place, "The Trolley Problem" (Well, I haven't seen it, so no opinion.)
Best Professional Editor (Long Form)
My first-place vote: Joe Monti
Winner: Sheila Gilbert
Best Professional Editor (Short Form)
My first-place vote: Thomases
Winner: Thomases
Best Professional Artist
Prediction: ??
My first-place vote: Sana Takeda
Winner: Sana Takeda (Wooo!)
Best Semiprozine
My first-place vote: Uncanny
Winner: Uncanny
(There were a ton of people on this stage and we really could have used some captions as to who was speaking.)
Best Fanzine
My first-place vote: Galactic Journey
Winner: File 770
(Ok, v. classy of Glyer to withdraw from future years.)
Best Fancast
I think it was Ditchdiggers?
Best Fan Writer
My first-place vote: Bogi Takács
Winner: Sarah Gailey
Best Fan Artist
My first-place vote: Geneva Benton
Winner: Geneva Benton (Yay, richly deserved.)
The Best Young Adult Book Not A Hugo
Prediction: Summer in Orcus
My first-place vote: In Other Lands
Winner: Akata Warrior
(Well, I really didn't want it to be Pullman, and I figured it would be one of the three known names. Still couldn't help getting a little keyed up hoping for Brennan there though.)
The John W. Campbell Not A Hugo
Prediction: Rivers Solomon
My first-place vote: Vina Jie-Min Prasad
Winner: Rebecca Roanhorse
So, I correctly predicted the four traditional fiction categories, graphic story, and sort of related (although I had only narrowed it down to two so that doesn't really count as a prediction.) Made wrong predictions for Dramatic Long, YA, and the Campbell. I had seven of my first place votes win, although two of those were Semipro and Short Editors which are not categories I care very much about. But I will count them for the purposes of comparing the success of my votes vs predictions. (Clearly what I need to do is predict in more of the minor categories...)
