I told everyone at my birthday dinner I would report back on the mammogram question, so I'm going to do that.
My doctor did think it was worthwhile for me, after some discussion of the various conflicting recommendations (40+ annually, 50+ annually, 45+ annually, baseline at 40 and then annually later, etc etc). I'm not sure if that's what she tells all of her 40yos or if it was influenced by my particular medical history/boobs/whatever. Her office made the appointment for me (just two days after my physical - obviously this will vary but it seemed like for where I was going in Arlington it was pretty easy to get an appointment scheduling-wise). The whole thing was really fast and easy - for me and my personal anatomy, it wasn't *comfortable* but never really crossed the line into "okay, ouch, that's pain". I had taken ibuprofen about 90 minutes beforehand and softened up my boobs with two pregnancies and four years of breastfeeding - one of those is obviously going to be easier for other people to do but I suspect both contributed. :) Anyways, much worse things have happened to my boobs, mammography has nothing on having your kid pull to stand with your nipple, or when they get those first teeth. Or to compare to other annual medical stuff, for me it was less unpleasant than a Pap or dental xrays. I felt a few twinges of lingering soreness in one of them later in the day, but I get that sometimes anyways. Would definitely mammogram again without worry.
