So this was ornate and abstruse and for quite awhile lacking in momentum, but I kept at it, because I've liked Lemberg's stuff in the past (and honestly probably because I'm biased in favor of enby authors and will cut them more slack than I might otherwise), and it eventually got somewhere and turned into an interesting story about fantastical kink and consent and power exchange, and I kind of want to spend more time in their Birdverse now, this is the same world that "Grandmother-nai-Leylit's Cloth of Winds" was set in.
Proof of Concept, Gwyneth Jones, was unreadable. By me, I mean. If every book has its reader it must have been readable to someone - whoever acquired and edited it for Tor, at the minimum - but their ability to extract an enjoyable narrative from that mess must be really different than mine.
