The Prey of Gods, by Nicky Drayden, came highly recommended by [personal profile] glynhogen. I think unfortunately I did not like it as much as she did. I really liked the opening chapters, but then, I don't know, there was a *lot* going on and it didn't quite all hang together for me, and I was more interested in some of the characters than others, and there was some stuff that was heavier and darker than I was prepared for, and I ended up kind of lukewarm about it. But there's definitely some awesome stuff here, cool blending of mythological fantasy and near-future SF. With dik-diks. Recommended if you like the mix of fantasy and scifi elements that Okorafor did in Lagoon, or, like, Saga. Or maybe Sandman.

Also the cover is FANTASTIC. I dunno if I like the rest of Brenoch Adams' body of work to nominate them for pro artist but Prey of Gods should totally get Cover of the Year if that was a thing.

Oh, also content warning for child harm including sexual assault and accidental death and for animal harm. Some of which content is not central to the story (and honestly most of it I was like... is this really necessary?).

I think this book was third on my list of things that I encountered when I was in The Right Mood this year. So I'm generally able to make a distinction between Things That Work and Things That Don't Work, but this was a case where the Things That Work were more squee-worthy. And I feel like the Things That Don't Work are things that get fixed with greater experience.
