a book and two movies
Nov. 2nd, 2017 08:50 pmNull States is the followup to last year's Infomocracy, which put Malka Older on the Hugo ballot for the Campbell. It has some book-two problems - less kabang than the first one, clearly saving up/setting up for a big book three - but I'm still super fond of this interesting world and cast of characters. Fans of Stephenson/Doctorow/Stross who haven't gotten on the Older bus yet should hop on board... especially lukewarm fans who wish they could get the political-sf cleverness without the dude-centric perspective. Null States takes place primarily in Darfur, with secondary locations in Geneva and China - I really appreciate sf that's like, the future is going to happen to the *entire world*, and thinks about that.
Battle of the Sexes and Professor Marston and the Wonder Women were both so astonishingly to my taste that I don't have much to say other than that it's delightful to apparently be a demographic someone wants to make movies for now. I mean, I suppose that I have evolved into this demographic, if you told me five years ago that I was going to care about a plot about equal pay in women's tennis I would have made a really dubious face. On the other hand if you told me twenty years ago I was going to see a kinky queer poly family on the big screen my eyes would have fallen out of my head, so, yay for these movies and I having all arrived to this time together, or something.
