Hidden Figures is OUTSTANDING; October Sky is a long-time favorite movie of mine, although I haven't watched it in years, and this is, I think, even better. Sheer delight and excellence. To talk briefly about one mildly spoilery aspect , it really hit me hard (in a good way) to see characters in a movie who were *incidentally* mothers - like, not that their kids weren't important to them, but that parenting was not their primary action onscreen, and their identity as mothers wasn't central to their character arcs/conflicts in the film. Mothers... who are also people, who the fuck knew! I had to take the kids to see Sing a few days ago (was sold out when the grandparents tried, I ended up holding the bag) and was really frustrated by the Mom character whose happy ending is just for her kids and husband to appreciate her again (and who cares that she's apparently a brilliant inventor, it was more important to wear a sparkly dress and be seen as desirable). Hidden Figures is like... a giant wind-tunnel blast of fresh air in the face of so much mainstream movie bullshit.

I would like to particularly point out that it was officially released in 2016, making it Hugo-nominable in the nominations that have just opened! "But historical fiction isn't science fiction", you say - let me point out that Apollo 13 was a finalist and October Sky made the long list, so clearly some Hugo voters consider these kinds of movies eligible.
