Hugo 2016 outcomes
Aug. 21st, 2016 03:59 pmI've ended up more preoccupied with tracking Q's fluid intake this weekend than the Hugo results (boo sick children) but some quick comments. I am in general very pleased with the winners; Fifth Season is a little bit like Three-Body Problem in that I didn't personally like it but I'm very happy to see the Hugo voters like it. Jemisin is a great writer who deserves recognition and I think it's a good outcome for the field. Lots of other stuff I liked a lot in the winners, yay!
Of interest in the long lists: they apparently did move Sorcerer of the Wildeeps to the novella category, I was curious what would happen with that (I wonder if I should take it as a precedent for nominating in future years?). "Pauper Prince" and "So Much Cooking" and Nimona would probably all have made it without the rabids. Some other people have analyzed numbers and concluded that there were a lot more rabid nominators than rabid voters, suggesting that people may not want to keep paying $50 indefinitely to spite-interfere.
I'm not sure what I think of EPH and 3SV and 5&6 all passing - I'm a little worried that we haven't seen analysis of what EPH would do in the dramatic presentation categories, although I guess it's more important to un-break the written categories than not break the dramatics. 3SV sounds like a giant pain but I guess we'll see. I'm glad they amended 4&6 to 5&6 just so it doesn't feel like I'm losing a nomination slot. I don't know, I guess I'm glad that we're going to try a bunch of improvements? (Hm, 3SV is just passed on to next year, so next year we're going to do EPH and 5&6 without it, I wonder if it won't ratify if people feel like next year's ballot turns out okay.)
