psocopteraOkay, some good: Maria Hill/the Helicarrier is my forever ship and I was so pleased to see her getting some flying time there. I feel a little weird being all "Steve is still suicidal yay" but it felt *very much in keeping with his character* that he's up in the air with Nat on the flying city being all "we probably won't survive this, yup" because oh look Steve you're flying on something, must be time to not care if you survive again. (Although you'd think now that he knows Bucky is back he'd be a *little* more determined to live.) Some decent Tony/Bruce banter and I thought the handling of Tony's role in Ultron was pretty good in terms of levels of stupid/deceit/etc, I was braced for it to be much worse.
The bad: Bruce/Natasha whaaaaaat. It's not that I don't ship it (because I'll read almost anything and like it) it's that I hated so much of how it was done and the role Nat got in this movie. I swear there was fucking soft-focus camera and tweedly little music on her. And the "I'm a monster too because they sterilized me" - jesus fucking christ, I KNOW it should never be a surprise that mainstream media will always, always, always define female characters by their reproductive organs, but it pisses me off *every time* and I am never going to just accept it. FUCK THAT BULLSHIT. Baby-wanting has never even shown up in Black Widow's character before, why the fuck is this now part of her defining tragedy.
Also, I don't know, I am an old person, I had a really hard time following or feeling engaged in a lot of the action and even catching some of the dialogue. I just... I really wanted to love this movie, and I kept noticing that I wasn't.
Although there were moments! Any time Natasha uses the shield, or Thor and Steve worked together hitting the shield with the hammer. Some of getting to see Tony in the Hulkbuster, although what I really wanted was Tony being able to talk Bruce down instead of Natasha (or Steve or Clint or anybody, grrr). Steve getting knocked off his feet by Quicksilver and twisting in the air and landing, that was lovely. The set-piece battle at the end around the gizmo when it goes all slow-mo, that was really pretty.
I just... I want Maria Hill to be giving Steve orders, not reporting to him with an infodump. I want Nat to be who she was in Cap2. I want *Steve* to be who he was in Cap2 - the whole running gag about the swearing seemed so random and stupid. They did that big baton pass at the end and I was like, hrm, how many of the new Avengers do I even feel any investment in? Falcon, for sure (and I love that he's canonically chasing the Winter Soldier while Steve Avenges) but, I dunno, I just feel kind of meh about Scarlet Witch and Vision. Although I do want to write some kind of Tony-mourning-for-JARVIS thing because waaaaah, so maybe I'll end up with Vision feels from that.
