Blargh, my kids drive me crazy sometimes. Q spent the winter obsessed with trying to play ball sports in the living room - we had to take away everything that was remotely ball-like, I mean, I had to confiscate his foam polyhedral dice because he just couldn't stop kicking and hitting and throwing them - and we signed him up for soccer this spring and he will. not. play. Well, okay, the first week it turned out he was sick, and last week he *did* join in after awhile and got pretty into it, and I thought, great, we're set, but this week he spent the entire class standing next to me again, refusing to even go near the class. JFC, kid, I was barely willing to have to stand around outside for 45 minutes for you to *play* soccer, it is SO FUCKING FRUSTRATING to have to do it for you to NOT play soccer.

Aw, bummer. :^( Did you talk to the coaches (or whatever they call themselves) about it? I feel like one of the nice things about shotokan (at least as practiced at Sarah's School) is that the instructors will put in a fair bit of one-on-one time to pull new kids into the class. Wasn't really necessary with ours, but I've seen them do it, most recently with a new little kid in Q's class, and a newly-promoted orange belt (who I suspect was intimidated by the bigger kids in the intermediate class) in Junie's.
