Fell on the way to Junie's pickup, had to call Josh to come get her and rescue me and Q from someone's front steps. Ankle just wasn't playing the walking game. And I had gone out without my sticks. Which is the part I feel really stupid about. I don't know why it's taking me so long to wrap my head around the idea that it's permanently unreliable and taking precautions about it just needs to be a standard part of my life now. I am philosophically pro-adaptive technology, I swear! I just... blargh. Sometimes it's really hard to remember that the hassle and struggle of getting my boot on over the brace is still better than flopping around in the snow screaming while Q silently freaks out. Maybe I should try to buy some different boots. BAH, why are bodies fallible.

That sounds really shitty and stressful and I'm very sorry you've had to deal with all of this. :(

I feel gross and appropriative complaining about it when there are so many people dealing with actual disabilities or chronic illnesses - I'm pretty sure "incompetent ankle" is not actually a disability. On the other hand I feel like I might be better at using my technology and taking this into account as a factor in my life if I let myself tell myself a story about the situation that uses that kind of language. I don't know, I guess "I have a bad ankle" doesn't commit to that being any particular category of attribute (like "disability"), I just... blargh. Thanks for your sympathy, anyways, sorry to babble there.

It doesn't have to be a Capital D Disability to be super inconvenient and difficult to deal with!

Babbling always more than welcome <3 <3 <3

You had something unfortunate, painful, and hindering (for both you and your family) happen. Complaining seems well within the scope of acceptable responses to me! If the existence of others in more extreme circumstances were a good justification for feeling gross and appropriative about complaining... well, almost everyone has someone in a worse situation than they.

Anyway, hugs and good wishes. If you can think of something I can do to help/distract, please let me know.

yuck! it sucks walking around right now, and worse if you can't rely on your ankle!

Stay safe!

Ugh. How awful and scary for you and Q! It may be a minor disability* in the grand scheme of things but it is a huge delta from what you're used to, and until you get used to working around it, it is a pretty big deal.

*"a physical or mental condition that limits a person's movements, senses, or activities." check.

That's totally freaky! I think I didn't realize the extent to which this was a problem, so maybe using the language of disability is not such a bad thing -- it highlights the way in which you have to be careful/use technology in a way everyone can understand. Did you injure it at some point, or is this just unfortunate genetics? Glad you had a cell phone/got rescued.

I didn't realize it either. I mean, it was a real wakeup call that if I'm putting myself in a position with the kids where I'm counting on being able to walk, I have to make sure I've thought about the ankle *every time*. Q was pretty traumatized, we've had several conversations both about whether Mama is likely to fall down crying like that again and whether Q's own ankles hurt. Blargh.
