Korra episode 4
Sep. 30th, 2013 12:12 amSo which female secondary character does the writing of most piss me off?
In the first corner, Senna, Korra's mom - it's not clear whether the writers or the people in her world are more dismissive of her. Korra's family plot arc is all about her dad - she's angry at her dad, she reconciles with her dad, she rescues her dad, etc. Last episode she had a conversation with her mom where she's surprised that her mom *knew* - like it doesn't even need to be said that of course her mom couldn't have been part of the decision to keep her isolated for training, that was just her dad, the only possibilities are that Senna was also lied to, or just went along with it. Then in this episode Unalaq has Senna found innocent and Tonraq found guilty even though they were accused of pretty much the same things - but obviously a woman couldn't have agency to commit treason, the meeting must just have been at her house, right? It would be one thing if Unalaq thought that but in the next scene we see her rallying the Southern resistance, but, no, in the next scene she's just crying and feeling helpless, I guess it really was Tonraq who had all the agency in that family. Tonraq is an important character and Senna is just sort of... there.
In the other corner, Eska. I really, really do not get what they're trying to accomplish with Bolin's abusive relationship plot arc here. Is this supposed to be funny? Are they trying to show us something important about Bolin's character? OMG bitches be cray-cray amirite? Who thought "what if you crossed Azula with Mai and then took away everything interesting and made her a one-note joke" was what this show needed? I actually find this so frustrating that I've started working on an Eska story, ye olde "what kind of backstory could possibly make this all make sense" sort of fixit.
Oh and then there's Varrick's assistant who is trapped underneath him in a tiny space where only his head sticks out, she would certainly be the woman most *literally* being sat on by the show.
