In general: things looking up.

Less than 24 hours later: mouse poop on the counters. I would think I was being punished for my hubris except I don't really think it was hubristic to say "largely through no action of my own various situations have improved". Also, I feel like I still get the last laugh here, because I've fought mice before and won and I feel much less out of my depth than I did with the carpenter ants.

We've got some mice in the eaves, but I don't think that there are any in the house. If you've got any suggestions for getting rid of ours (beyond calling my friend at AAPest Control who removed the racoons a couple of years ago), please share.

Btw, our ants seem to have gone elsewhere--they are, indeed, a brief though annoying annual occurrence.
