I haven't backed up my computer in months. Already, you think you see where this is going... but there's a twist: last night I decided to *back it up*, so I got out the scsi cables and hooked up my external hard drive... and couldn't boot. Various checking of termination and messing around with scsi addresses later, it couldn't even boot with the scsi stuff unplugged. The little question mark just went blinky blinky blinky in that scary "I can't find my hard disk with both hands" manner. A certain amount of panic ensued; I must credit letzan, with whom I was on the phone, for a great deal of patience and calm sense.

I did eventually manage to boot from my system cd and at least find my hard drive via Disk First Aid, so I was able to pop the WIPs and other recent writing onto floppies. So at this point no matter what happens with my hard drive I don't lose anything too important (assuming everything's okay with my backup drive, which should still have my most recent (though long-ago) backup). Well, I don't lose too much information-wise; losing the functionality of my computer would be deeply aggravating (realistically, would probably mean "no computer at home" ::shudder::). But we're not there yet; Letzan is coming over with her copy of Norton (er, Utilities, not the Norton Anthology of Modern Literature or something) and I have high hopes things will be Put Right.

Still, I find it rather ironic that it was apparently the act of setting up to back up that triggered the problem; talk about your self-defeating actions...

Hee hee. Maybe you could wack your computer with the Norton Anthology of Modern Literature til it does what you want. Or maybe you should read it stories til it feels better.
