tv review: Legend of Korra
Jul. 2nd, 2012 12:28 amThere are a zillion things I could complain about. (And I did, as we watched... in fact I got cited for overuse of "oh for fuck's sake".) But to pick on one particular writing mistake: showing a third character crying when the brothers have to separate does not actually make their separation more poignant. Having someone *say* "that's the saddest story I've ever heard" does not actually make the story sadder. You want to pack an emotional punch, the story actually has to swing a fist, you can't just hold up a card saying "bam" and expect the audience to reel.
I'm vexed because I feel like there was actually some good potential in the plot outline, it just failed to make it to the screen in an interesting way.
I don't think I want to write it myself, but I hope to see fic about the lieutenant and Daddy Sato reacting in different ways to the revelation of Amon's bending. Because maybe Amon was not truly proof that a non-bender could take on a bender effectively, but the lieutenant and Sato actually were. (Sato in particular has some of the interesting tropes of the non-powered superhero - Batman's revenge motive, Iron Man's inventive genius and, uh, fondness for robot suits. And energy weapons in his palms. Hmmm.)
