So I am not wild about Hawaii Five-0. I was excited about the idea (Daniel Dae Kim! Masi Oka!) and watched the pilot and found it tedious with no redeeming qualities (I already watched Daniel Dae Kim take the backseat to uninteresting white men for six seasons of Lost, thanks, and Masi Oka wasn't even in it). Plus the fandom was booming right around the time I was trying to will a Huge fandom into existence and, you know, rationally, it's not like those are shows competing for the same market share, but emotionally it was just like ugh why does everyone have to slobber all over dumbasses with guns when here's the most awesome thing I've seen on TV in ages and... yeah. But at the same time it was hard to just shrug and go elsewhere when authors I liked from SGA were moving into H50 and there was squee and recs etc... for hot new fic, one goes to the hot new fandoms. Fortunately any sufficiently large fandom has worthwhile stories, and here are two. (Both Steve/Danny, the popular pairing.)

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is an AU set in a world with mermaids. I liked the world-building details about slang and mermaid society. Also there's bonding, a fun slash trope which makes the pairing more interesting. About 40K words.

Lost at the Edge of the Sun is one of the only works of fanfiction I've ever read that deals with poverty realistically and respectfully. You may be thinking "but why would I want that?"; all I can say is it's really well done and makes for good character drama. 24K words.

(These are yesterday's and today's recs, conveniently bundled.)
