Okay, rather than something old and much loved, today we have a story I just read that I thought was interesting.

No Soul To Sell is an Inception kink fest prompt fill and as you might expect from comment-fic (22K words in 40 comments, so a bit of a pain to read) would benefit greatly from an editorial going-over. I'm going to go ahead and spoil the main conceit which is that due to gender-bending shenanigans while dreaming, Arthur gets incepted to believe he's pregnant. There's cool stuff playing around with how dreaming works, which is a thing I really like in Inception fanfic (the best scene was in part 24 or so), and also some interesting bits regarding gender and pregnancy, which is a thing I like in mpreg fic, and is something I think about in my own life sometimes. You could probably also write an essay about how it's an adoption narrative without an actual adoptee - a relinquishment narrative, I guess I should say. Reminds me of the single-episode child thing you sometimes get in TV shows (Troi had that baby, Data had Lal), all the angst and drama of having a kid without the inconvenience of an actual child character. That sounds critical but I thought it was handled well; it's just an interesting thing to want to do, in fiction. (I feel like adoption stories in fanfic are overwhelmingly from the perspective of the adoptive parents (as a way to give male/male couples kids) with occasional kid-pov focusing on their life with the a-parents, and we don't tend to write about our characters as first parents/birthparents so much. Virtual loss, yes, real actual kid out there they're not raising, not so much. I suppose there must be a bunch of late-season X-Files fic dealing with this, which I fell out of that fandom too early to see?)
