Yuletide 2012 recs - S, R, Q
Jan. 12th, 2013 06:48 pmNot Yuletide, but I liked Thursday's Daily Science Fiction short story, Final Corrections, Pittsburgh Times-Dispatch.
Prakriti, a crossover between The Secret Garden and A Little Princess. I thought it was so-so, and then the last bit killed me.
The Kissing Traditions of Monsea. Cashore's Seven Kingdoms series, specifically Bitterblue, which, I know I'm so sick of Leck you wouldn't think I'd like any stories about him, but this was creepy and well done.
Full House and Triad, two Singin' in the Rain trio-fics (Don/Kathy/Cosmo) with two different visions of what their lives might be like.
You Could Turn It On Like A Light, a long (12000 words) Sports Night story full of banter.
Zone F - Fandom Primer. Only for Yuletide, this is She-Ra: Princess of Power reimagined as an adult SF drama - and this is the guide to its fandom. Hee.
Polysemy. I guess what Railsea needed was lesbians? (Although really, what isn't improved by lesbians. Er, not so much in a "woo, some girls dance with women" way as a "helps to avoid dude-centricity" way.) Anyways, I think I liked this better than I liked the book.
A Relaxing Weekend Away from the Job, a Ghostbusters story (or I guess Real Ghostbusters, is that different?). Silly Lovecraftian-things-at-a-con story, 4800 words.
Set a caged bird free, a Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm story. I may have reread most of that on Gutenberg in the course of reading this. Man, there is a lot about Adam Ladd that would be way creepy in a modern context (how he doesn't like grown-up women, just little girls?) but this story does a good job of interrogating his relationship with Rebecca from Rebecca's point of view as a woman of her era, and I really liked the balance of shippiness and her ambition/desire for freedom.
Five Times Maia Duvall Was Actually Glad To Have Been On The Away Mission. Of *course* there's Redshirts fanfic. 2700 words.
Perigee, a Robots story. I love how Donovan/Powell has become a Yuletide tradition.
One Cannot Ask Loneliness, fanfic for Sarah Rees Brennan's short story Queen of Atlantis!
Chance Meeting at the Jefferson Hotel. Most of what I remember about Quiz Show is being dazzled by Ralph Fiennes' smile, but I enjoyed this as period slash even if I don't remember much about the characters.
what the moonlight seeswas my favorite of this year's Queen's Thief stories. Short and simple and nice.
