Overall: sideways thumb.
Getting there: We took the bus+stroller, T+stroller would also work. (Or T without stroller if your small will walk a few blocks without dragging.)
Cost: $9/big, $6/small, free/2 and under. I paid $4 with a library pass.
What's there: many things to look at and read, but not much to touch. (I've been there before, but couldn't remember how much interactivity there was.) We looked at some colorful gems and minerals (most of them are in table-cases too high for smalls to see without a boost, but the biggest pieces are in shelf cases along the walls, including some down at floor level). We looked briefly at dinosaur bones. Some fun was had in the halls of stuffed mammals and birds, identifying things like rhino and zebra and giraffe and bat (and getting an appreciation for their real sizes) and introducing a few new animals (alpaca, pangolin, bison). Junie's favorite thing was the "telephone" providing the audio track to a video display - she happily yelled "hello? hello?" into it for awhile while I looked at something about trees of New England. She was antsy and asking to leave after not much longer than half an hour, though. (We probably stayed another 15 minutes as we explored a few more rooms on the way out.) It was a nice little outing but not very exciting for Junie. We went to the Cambridge Common playground afterwards (which is a two-thumbs-up playground) and that was a bigger hit.
