Project: How Much Water?
Materials: pot of water, three different quarter-cup measuring cups, two different one-cup measuring cups
Explanatory details: done at the kitchen sink
How did it go: okay. I think I learned more from this one than Juniper did - I had naively pictured her holding one cup in one hand and the other in the other hand and pouring from one to the other over the sink, because that's how I would do it, but of course that's too many hands for a junior scientist, and she preferred to set the receptacle cup down on the counter and pour into it there. Which was okay except that she was very interested in overflowing. She very happily poured water for quite awhile though, and then I mopped up and it was fine.
Things we talked about: That different cups were different shapes but held the same amount of water, that we could count how many little cups we could pour into the big cup
What Junie got out of it: Pouring is fun! She's poured water from a cup in the bath many many times (and from her beverage all over her dinner and lap), and played with rice in scoop-type cups, but this was the first time she got to try water in scoops. It ended up being more of a motor exercise than a science project. And that's fine.
